With a sushi empire that includes 250 restaurants in 10 countries, Sakae Sushi is a true Think Big Success Story. We talked to Douglas Foo who shared the key ingredients of Sakae Sushi’s success.

One of Singapore’s leading entrepreneurs, Douglas Foo, CEO of Sakae Holdings, successfully switched from the garment industry to the highly competitive world of F&B. In the 1st of a 2-part series, he shares with us the Sakae Sushi journey and how thinking big and thinking global made it a success.

Green is Gold

The world has embraced Japanese cuisine for its unique flavours and distinctly healthy methods of preparation. These are the very same characteristics that made Douglas Foo think about creating a restaurant that is synonymous to healthy Japanese food. Research has shown that the opportunity lies in the market’s openness to try food that is healthy and more beneficial to the body. Sakae Sushi introduced innovations that catered to that need, one of which is putting Vitamin E into their rice to enhance its nutritional benefits.

Douglas confesses that the big idea for Sakae Sushi was not solely his. It is a vision shared by a team who aimed to create a global sushi restaurant brand. This shared dream commenced with the opening of the first Sakae Sushi outlet in 1997. Fast forward to 2013, the iconic green Sakae frog can now be seen in 250 stores in 10 different countries across Asia.

The Sakae Frog

The Japanese name Sakae means prosperity and the frog was meant to symbolise it. Douglas says that the Sakae frog is a blend of Japanese and Chinese elements. Its head and body form the lucky figure 8, while its bottom part is reminiscent of a rice bowl and the shape of the golden ingot, symbols of abundance and richness for the Chinese.

Douglas interestingly compares his team to various parts of the frog. Those who engage in planning and research are represented by the eyes, those who serve and interact with customers are represented by the smile, and together as a team they move in leaps and bounds to leave the Sakae frog imprint all across the globe.

The Sakae Technology

A restaurant that has maximised technology in its operation for years, Sakae Sushi is distinguished by a unique ordering system – the interactive menu. Back in its start-up days, no developer was willing to do such extensive work for a mere 3-store restaurant group, but still, they persevered with the innovation. Sakae created its own proprietary interactive menu, what proved to be a challenge then, became one of the brand’s most important assets. Through technology, globalisation fast became a reality for Sakae Sushi.

Watch out for Part 2 of our interview with Sakae Holdings CEO Douglas Foo

Canon champions your company with creative productivity, security and mobility

To compete effectively in today’s world, you and your company should always explore ways to work smarter. Your office multifunction device (MFD) must provide efficient and creative answers for workplace needs, over and above your basic printing, copying and scanning.

Canon is ready to support your company, be it a small, medium or large enterprise, with such new solutions. After the success of its award-winning imageRUNNER ADVANCE (iR-ADV) platform, Canon has launched a new generation of 16 MFD models. These models come packed with features to boost your productivity, increase your security, and enhance your mobility. What’s more, green-friendly companies will love the new models for features that lower total energy consumption.

Improving Productivity

Canon knows that every company wants to handle its documents efficiently since time and information are valuable. Do you need to edit a document urgently but realised that you don’t have the soft copy in your computer? Users will love the effective Optical Character Recognition (OCR) function. The new Canon devices can scan and convert documents into commonly accessed formats such as Microsoft Word and Excel, so that you can edit and update with ease.

Canon has also included a Scan-to-Cloud feature , so the new generation of iR-ADV devices allows you to scan and immediately upload to existing cloud destinations such as Microsoft Sharepoint, Salesforce.com, and Evernote, as well as many newer cloud destinations such as Office365, DropBox, PaperPort and GoogleDrive.

Working with counterparts in Japan or China and require a device that supports multiple languages? The document conversion service can extract and convert 120 languages quickly, from simplified and traditional Chinese, to Japanese and Korean.

Even with multiple large quantity print jobs, productivity in the office is never compromised. With the Canon iR-ADV series, you won’t have to wait. Black-and-white speeds are from 55 to 105ppm while colour print speeds are from 20 to 70ppm. It’s blazing speed, leading smoothly to greater efficiency and maximum productivity.

Enhancing Security

Canon knows that data security is a top concern for many businesses. As such, the iR-ADV series has been designed with a slew of control features that can help your company promote responsible printing within the organisation. Regular print statistics reports can be generated to moderate and control users’ access and usage. This in turn can help to better manage costs and security issues.

Through various authentication methods available, individual users can identify themselves using the new server-less login system. They can then easily automate frequently done tasks, such as Scan-to-Email and scanning to a document management system, to enhance their productivity.

In terms of security, users can print classified documents such as price lists and contracts, with an assurance of knowing that their documents will not be compromised. They can simply select the print jobs to be released after they are physically present to authenticate themselves at the device.

Enabling Mobility

With tablets and smartphones everywhere, companies need to keep abreast of technology, providing complementary anytime-anywhere access to data in the corporate system. The Canon Mobile Printing App can be downloaded from the App Store. With a compatible Canon MFD or single-function printer, you can now use a wireless network to print documents and photos directly from your iPhone or iPad. The App has a built-in web browser so you can access and view emails and websites, and twiddle with the flexible print settings.

Your mobile workforce will love the freedom of connecting to cloud platforms since it does not require a driver or server. With quick swipes on your devices, you now have direct access to Microsoft SharePoint Online and Google Docs. You can easily print documents stored there, whenever and wherever you need them, or scan and upload new documents to the cloud. With this, your company can create a mobile printing strategy, one that uses Canon’s reliable printing solution to integrate smoothly with existing office infrastructure.

Canon’s new generation imageRUNNER ADVANCE is your organisation’s solution to rising above competition and challenges. With increased productivity, security and mobility, Canon will create countless opportunities for you and your businesses to work smarter.

Nurturing Young Minds Creatively

The Kiddiwinkie Schoolhouse has been around for more than 15 years and yet it remains young as ever. With students’ ages ranging from as young as 18 months to 6 years old, Kiddiwinkie has been hard at work in delivering quality care and education through holistic nurturing of each child. As a growing business, the Kiddiwinkie Schoolhouse shares the same enthusiasm for lifelong learning as the little kids it teaches. It is constantly evolving as it searches for more innovative ways to create a nurturing environment.

Experiential Learning

School director Matthias Koh shares that at Kiddiwinkie, children enjoy the benefits of experiential learning, free from the confines of a traditional classroom.

This is manifested in the design of the school, with ample spaces for kids to roam, play and discover. Kiddiwinkie helps kids realise their creative pursuits. No matter how young they are, with proper support and guidance, they are able to achieve their kiddie dreams.

Moving Forward by Thinking Big

Kiddiwinkie may be a place for small kids, but is a place where thinking big is highly encouraged. Matthias believes that as a concept, “Think Big” is of utmost importance. He says that in fulfilling goals, those who dare to Think Big always have a better chance at victory. It is an important mindset that entrepreneurs and growing businesses like Kiddiwinkie must keep.

Teaching with Canon Technology

Part of Kiddiwinkie’s Think Big strategy is to use technology in teaching, as it is an important driver in the learning process. Through technology, teachers are able to tap into the latest resources, now more commonly found in the web and the digital space, and bring them into the Kiddiwinkie Schoolhouse. With more resources readily available, teachers can focus their attention on connecting more with the child.

Canon’s projector technology is also very important in Kiddiwinkie’s method of teaching. Projectors are physically mounted close to the wall to prevent teachers and students from bumping into them, or casting a shadow. Clarity of images also heightens the learning experience and makes it more immersive with exceptional colours and crisp intricate details.

The Canon dual projector set-up in the school, together with a special curved wall and superb sound contributes to the theatre ambience, excellently capturing the attention of highly active kids. Matthias says, “it is Canon’s technology at its peak”, commending its ability to make an otherwise challenging audience pay attention to what is being projected.

A Thriving Collaboration

Kiddiwinkie and Canon share a common passion for putting its customer in the centre or focus of all its efforts. For Kiddiwinkie, it is preparing its students for life through learning. For Canon, it is providing its business customers with solutions that continually enhance productivity. Together, their collaboration brings about results that future generations will truly benefit from.

Staying afloat in the very competitive business environment is a challenge that Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are constantly faced with. Fortunately, new technologies are rapidly being developed to empower businesses.

Today’s challenges may be great and varied, but with innovation and enhanced productivity, SMEs can have a greater chance to succeed. A testament to this was the recent Canon Business Technology Show 2013.

Held on 7 March 2013 at the Marina Mandarin Singapore, the event proved to be a meeting of the minds as business professionals converged to learn how people, technology and the right solutions propel businesses to the future. It was the perfect occasion to unveil Canon’s new generation imageRUNNER ADVANCE Multifunction Devices (MFDs). A range of new models that goes beyond basic printing, scanning or copying, it features technology that delivers enhanced productivity, security and mobility.

The air of excitement was undeniable as Canon Singapore’s President and CEO Mr. Kensaku Konishi welcomed guests to the whole day event. His speech kicked off a series of inspiring talks and lively discussions on productivity and inspiring change in the business environment.

Championing Productivity was the topic of the Keynote Address delivered by Mr. Low Hock Meng, Executive Director of the Singapore Productivity Association. His talk featured various case studies that clearly illustrate how reengineering the way businesses are managed brought greater productivity and progress.

The Think Big Forum – Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Change

What makes an entrepreneur successful?

The first panel discussion proved to be very inspiring. The animated and lively Think Big Forum, moderated by Mr. Von Chan, Director and General Manager of Canon Singapore’s Business Imaging Division, featured some of the country’s most prominent entrepreneurs and leaders.

The panel provided various insights on how committed and out of the box thinking partly determines the future of a venture. Learning to use technology also helps in carrying out future strategies.

Seated from left to right: Mr. Von Chan, Director and General Manager of Canon Singapore’s Business Imaging Division, Dr. Low Lee Yong, CEO and Founder of MHC Asia Group of Companies, Mrs. Jessie Phua, President of the Singapore Bowling Federation, Mr. Jimmy Fong, Chairman and CEO of Epicentre, and Ms. Elim Chew, Founder and President of 77th Street.

Dr. Low Lee Yong said that in the age of TGIF (Twitter, Google, Internet and Facebook), an entrepreneur must constantly be updated to be able to cope. Much like a smart phone, one needs to be equipped with all the apps to maximise and optimise strengths. Ms. Jessie Phua, a staunch advocate of Singapore sports, talked about setting goals, having tenacity and learning to work as a team, values that apply to both sports and business. Successful retailers Elim Chew and Jimmy Fong touched on branding, value added services and social entrepreneurship as drivers of success. In a domestic market that is relatively small, learning to innovate is a must.

The audience gathered at the Event Hall couldn’t agree more. Embracing change and always being ahead of the curve has opened doors for many, and the featured Think Big speakers that morning are clearly good examples of such thinking.

The Human Capital Forum

Technology may be considered today’s game changer, but people are still the lifeblood and the main drivers of a company’s success.

The second panel discussion, moderated by Mr. Victor Tay, Chief Operating Officer of the Singapore Business Federation, tackled the importance of Human Capital. Featuring respected speakers from different business industries, the forum focused on how precious Human Capital is in keeping businesses running well.

During the discussion, all panel speakers were united in saying that people are still every company’s greatest asset. By keeping them empowered, they become more productive. Mr. Lim Kok Him shares that at Canon, people are encouraged to “do more, work less”. By working within business hours and having quality time at home, they can be more prepared to face new challenges.

The panel speakers also gave their views on how to keep good people in the company. Greenpac’s Ms. Chong believes in management with a personal touch. She stressed that happy people work better together and are more willing to help finish tasks outside of their job scope. At Atlas Sound Vision, the concept of working as a team is taken seriously and the whole team is included in the decision-making.

The audience at the Event Hall were given a chance to field in their questions and the panel gamely answered, drawing from experiences at their respective companies.
How can a business maximise its workforce to achieve success?

The answers can be summed up in 3 key points: improve the business process, upskill the staff, and use technology. At the end of the forum, everyone agreed that it is only in correcting old habits and constant improvement can a company get the most out of its people.

Technology for Greater Productivity

Apart from the Forums, the event also showcased the latest business solutions from Canon and its partners. Product displays as well as Breakout Sessions featured the latest Canon technologies that SMEs can use to enhance productivity.
Participants learned about new ways to work beyond the confines of a conventional office set up through Microsoft’s Office 365 for Business. Print management, mobility and workflow were important issues addressed by uniFLOW and software developed by Nuance. Security of electronic information and supervision of digital assets were also given special focus in the breakout sessions.

Speakers from long-time Canon partners Microsoft, NT-Ware, Nuance Communications, Open Text Asia, and Bizmann Systems facilitated the different Breakout Sessions to enlighten the inquisitive crowd.

The 3rd Young Entrepreneur Awards (YEA) proved bigger and better, attracting close to 130 business proposals and marking the first time in the competition’s history that a joint-third has been awarded due to the high quality of entries received.

The awards presentation ceremony, which took place on 18 Feb 2013 at Chijmes Hall, was graced by Member of Parliament Inderjit Singh, an entrepreneur who started six different businesses including semiconductor firm United Test and Assembly Centre (UTAC), currently listed on the Singapore Stock Exchange.

Others present at the ceremony included the judges for the competition as well as local business leaders and entrepreneurs such as Ms. Elim Chew (77th Street), Mr. Patrick Liew (HSR International Realtors), Ms. Josephine Ng (A-Changin Pte Ltd), Mr. Andrew Koh (Canon Singapore) and Ms. Zakiah Halim (Radio Division, MediaCorp Pte Ltd).

That night, a total of $24,000 worth of cash and business products, courtesy of Canon and MediaCorp, were awarded to the top four business plans submitted during the competition. In addition, the grand winner was presented with an additional $1,000 cash prize, thanks to ACE (Action Community for Entrepreneurship). Here are the winners:

Winner
(Jamon Mok / Gazaab Social Ventures)

Prizes: $5,000 cash prize, $5000 worth of Canon business products

Aimed at alleviating poverty in less developed nations, Gazaab Social Ventures organises business competitions to offer funding, networks and business advice to ‘bottom of the pyramid’ entrepreneurs looking to start a business but can’t get any help.

In addition to educating them in basic business concepts and connecting them with successful local entrepreneurs, participants are invited to each submit a business plan with Gazaab choosing four to six entrepreneurs to invest in. In return, Gazaab will own a percentage of equity in these companies and take a small amount of their earnings, then reinvest it in other businesses.

When asked about the thought process behind this business idea, Jamon replied, “It really evolved from an overseas community project that was done during my first year at Singapore Management University (SMU). We wanted to help a small village in Nepal and thought that organising a business competition might help. It went so well that we did it over and over again. By the third year, we decided that the only way we could help as many communities as possible was by creating a social enterprise.”

He added, “We are currently in the stage of raising capital to organise more competitions and possibly expanding to Cambodia. Winning the YEA definitely lends more credibility to what we do and provides affirmation of our work and positive social impact.”

1st Runner-Up
(Huang Renzhi / GeniEye)

Prizes: $3,000 cash prize, $3000 worth of Canon business products

For Renzhi, it was his unyielding perseverance that proved the difference. Having taken part in the 1st YEA where he emerged a finalist together with 19 other teams, Renzhi took the experience and advice he gained from the judges to refine his business plan further before trying again in the 3rd YEA.

He explained, “For the first competition when I pitched my product idea, I received plenty of useful feedback from the judges. After incorporating their suggestions and improving my product, it became revenue generating for me. I realised that the YEA is a good avenue to tap on the judges’ experience. This time, taking part in the 3rd YEA, I pitched a new product and got lucky and won!”

Called GeniEye, Renzhi’s latest product offering connects marathon organisers and event photographers. Utilising technology that was developed by the NUS School of Computing, GeniEye automatically picks up tag numbers and sorts them accordingly, saving photographers the hassle of having to tag each photo manually.

“By making it simpler for event photographers to upload their photos, it actually incentivises them to do so sooner. As a result, marathon participants enjoy a larger base of photos to choose from, hence increasing the likelihood of a purchase,” he added.

2nd Runner-Up, Joint
(Lukas Seet / Armor Bash)

Prizes: $2,000 cash prize, $2000 worth of Canon business products

Bringing fantasy role-playing games to life, Lukas developed Armor Bash a competitive sport where teams battle to take down each other’s castle using over a hundred types of weaponry, armours, catapults and strategy (all safe of course).

On how he came up with the idea of mixing business and pleasure, Lukas said, “It began when I was developing confidence and icebreaker games for my tuition students. They had so much fun so I joined in,” adding, “Armor Bash can be played virtually anywhere, on an open field, in schools etc. Having won the competition, my plan is to launch this locally and in the US, where team-building games are big.”

2nd Runner-Up, Joint
(Fu Yong Hong / GreenDot Gourmet)

Prizes: $2,000 cash prize, $2000 worth of Canon business products

Imagine vegetarian food becoming a hit among youths just like fast food… that day could come sooner than you think, thanks to Yong Hong and Justin. As founders of GreenDot Gourmet, they revolutionised vegetarian food by introducing green fast food consisting of soya burgers, rice-in-a-cup items and Bento set meals.

Describing how their business began, Yung Hong said, “We started selling in schools first as we wanted to target the young as well as ride on the low set-up cost.” His partner Justin added, “More importantly, opening in schools enables us to make the most impact to the next generation, letting them know that vegetarian food doesn’t just taste good and is healthier, it also helps protect animals.”

Having already two stalls in operation, one in Temasek Polytechnic and another in Chung Cheng High School, it’s immediately back to work for both Yung Hong and Justin after winning the YEA as they prepare for the opening of two additional stalls in Raffles Girls’ School and Tanjong Katong Girls’ School.

An Invaluable Experience for All

Beyond the cash prize and Canon business products that will definitely come in useful for these young entrepreneurs, all the winners agreed that the advice they received from the YEA panel of judges were truly invaluable.

Top winner Jamon said, “The judges offered a lot of constructive comments to help take our business idea further. Coupled with their extensive network of contacts, it will certainly help grow our business.”

Echoing similar sentiment was joint 2nd runner-up Lukas Seet, “The feedback was very helpful because they (the judges) asked me what were the safety features of my game and how it could be patented. This started me thinking about whether I should patent my gameplay, the weapons or the armour itself.”

Even F&B entrepreneurs and joint 2nd runner-ups Yung Hong and Justin agreed, with Yung Hong saying, “The feedback that the judges gave us was truly priceless, it’s the best thing you can get from the competition.”

The YEA forms a crucial part of Canon’s Think Big Think Canon campaign, introduced to spur entrepreneurship in Singapore. In addition to providing start-ups with high-quality imaging products and document solutions for their business needs, Canon has also collaborated with ACE to develop a FREE ACE Starter Kit so start-ups can enjoy access to goods and services they never thought was possible.
