World Runway

Magazine Photographer and Style Council member Kenneth Wong has attended many fashion shows like this year’s Audi Fashion Festival and the Salvatore Ferragamo's Spring Summer 2011 fashion show but this was a totally brand new experience for him.

From the team behind the highly successful “Tokyo Girls Collection” and “Asia Girls Explosion” comes a whole new fashion experience that was unlike any other. Held at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, a sea of lights emitting tech-like colours set the stage for the premiere of WORLD RUNWAY.

The brainchild of Jake f.R, the event saw eight teams from around the world compete in a fashion face-off where each team had to scour Singapore’s most fashionable streets to create 10 runway looks each. With a budget of just S$500 for each look, it was interesting to see what the teams could come up with.

From the more conservative office chic style of team France to the colours of team Brazil and not forgetting the exciting props used for team Japan, it was definitely a sight to remember. The high fashion styles of Team USA and Team UK were also a big highlight not just for me but also for all 4,500 in attendance at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, to remember this rather unconventional fashion event for quite a while.

Though I was on assignment that day to cover the event for a magazine, I decided to head down to the front of the runway to put the IXUS 300 HS to work as well.

After all, as the IXUS 300 HS was small and easy to handle, I could get creative with the angles and positions, giving a different perspective to the photos taken from the photopit.

An example would be getting a shot from the same level as the runway looking up at the models as they walked in. The camera’s size and mobility allowed me to reach out with one hand to get the shot through a small gap.

And of course, this stylish little camera did not disappoint throughout as focus was spot and noise control was very decent considering I was using the upper range of the ISO capabilities.

In the end, Team UK won thanks to their crowd-wowing looks and as the Director of WORLD RUNWAY, Jake f.R. puts it: “UK’s winning edge was really their ability to wow the audience. I was looking out for the team who can beat the budget constraints and come up with something extraordinary. And I think team UK did just that.”

Big congratulations to Team UK and the rest of the teams who put in their best effort to awestruck everyone present that night. It was a big eye-opener for me in terms of photography and event experience especially seeing as how I could add variety to my photos with the IXUS 300 HS. I am definitely looking forward to the next WORLD RUNWAY!
