The Museum of Horrors

The end of October is usually marked with the festival called Halloween. In Singapore, we don’t exactly trick or treat but we do dress up for parties in various clubs.

Well the folks at MovieMania had other ideas. They wanted to create a huge walk-in exhibition to scare the socks off its visitors. So for the second successive year, The Museum of Horrors made its return at *SCAPE featuring an exhibition of classic Hollywood horror movie scenes and legendary horror folklore. Style Council members Kenneth Wong and Elliott Danker were invited for a tour of the museum only to realize they were stuck in a trap full of monsters.

With new monsters, new levels of terror and also, the debut of Asia’s 1st 3-D Creepy FunHouse, experienced with special 3-D glasses!

Halloween revelers witnessed the transformation of *SCAPE Warehouse into an indoor park of the macabre.

As we walked through the museum we saw more than 20 classic horror diorama sets and were really impressed with the kind of detail put into assembling them. The real treat however was the terror maze 3-D immersive experience, specially viewed through 3-D glasses. It was amazing especially with the cleaver play of colours but way too scary to show you pictures of. Trust me, we had nightmares after we went through the photos.

Other highlights of the museum included visitors being able to interact with ‘live’ characters, props and backdrops in an engaging environment of specially recreated scenes of terror whilst in air-conditioned comfort. In other words, the characters would scare you and you would interact by screaming and running away.

What we appreciated most was that these dioramas paid tribute to the best of Hollywood movie horror scenes, popular folklore and tales of terror from all horror genres. It was a fitting tribute to classic Hollywood horror, free of special effects and all portrayed with the genius of makeup. The detail that was involved was truly amazing and honestly it did creep us out many times. Thankfully we ended the trip with a smile from the good old Stay Puff Marshmallow Man!

Also, as part of a student engagement programme with Singapore Polytechnic, Year Two students will played a part in assisting MovieMania and *SCAPE with the setup and programming of The Museum of Horrors. In fact some of them even had the chance to role-play the characters from the horror movies on display and they certainly did enjoy themselves.

Shooting in such situations can be very tricky especially when it is dark enough to warrant the usage of flash yet you don’t want to light up the place too much as that would spoil the whole atmosphere of the place.

For this, it would help to take some test shots first to get a gauge of how the photos will turn out by setting the IXUS 300 HS to AV mode (Aperture Priority mode) and setting the Evaluative Compensation (EV) to -1. If the photo still comes out too bright, just set in a lower EV (all the way to -2).

After getting the settings right, it was a lot easier to get the shots we wanted wherein the subjects of the photos, from the display sets to the characters temselves, were exposed enough to be seen yet retaining the dark background, the whole dark atmosphere in the photo.
