Corporate Social Responsibility

Giving back to the community

Canon believes in being socially responsible and we are actively involved in various projects. These projects include reaching out to the less fortunate and being an active patron of sports, as well as a leading supporter of environmental conservation efforts.

Inspired by our corporate philosophy, kyosei, Canon Singapore kick-started the Canon Photography Exchange programme, which capitalised on our expertise in digital imaging, to bring a delightful learning experience to intellectually challenged groups. Photography is one of the many ways that Canon and teachers believe can help the students express themselves creatively.

Canon Singapore was recognised for its voluntary services rendered to the Association for Persons with Special Needs (APSN), one of the organisations it had been working with under the programme. The bronze Excellent Service Award was presented to the company during the Children's Charities Association annual awards presentation ceremony that took place in October 2009.

Canon Singapore also participated in other CSR activities in 2009 including Twestival, a global initiative that seeks to band Twitter users around the world for the purpose of benefiting a charity. Our participation both in donations and loan of imaging products helped to raise funds for the Singapore Children's Cancer Foundation and supported the local social media community.

Responding to an appeal from the Red Cross, Canon Singapore also donated to the relief efforts to aid the survivors of the earthquake that took place in Padang, Indonesia.
Partnership with Singapore Bowling Federation

Canon also actively pursues the kyosei philosophy through other avenues. For example, it supports sporting activities that contribute to the wellbeing of the community.

In June 2008, Canon Singapore participated in an exciting five-year sponsorship agreement with the Singapore Bowling Federation (SBF). The sponsorship will enable SBF to develop more programmes that will not only help nurture our nation's current and budding bowlers to their full potential but at the same time elevate the popularity of the sport in Singapore.
Singapore National Olympic Council Official Partnership Programme

Singapore National Olympic Council Official Partnership Programme

In September 2009, Canon was the first corporate entity to participate in the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) Official Partnership Programme (SOPP). Through the four-year sponsorship agreement, Canon and SNOC are partnering to promote Olympic values, raise the profile of the Olympic movement and create general interest for sports in the country and the major games that the Singapore team will participate in.

Six young athletes from the swimming, sailing, football, bowling and shooting arena were selected as Partner athletes under the SOPP. Canon and SNOC will develop programmes with the athletes as role models to inspire youth and promote sports.

Efforts include energy and resource conservation, elimination of hazardous substances, increasing transportation efficiency to reduce CO2 emissions and utilising product-packaging materials with low environmental burden. Laser cartridges are also collected and recycled.
Increasing environmental awareness

Increasing environmental awareness

To cultivate staff awareness and habits to protect the environment, Canon Singapore, as well as all the offices under Canon Asia Marketing Group, participated in the Earth Hour campaign on Saturday March 27, 2010.

Staffs were encouraged to participate in Earth Hour by turning off their home lights. This received an overwhelming response with staff voluntarily pledging their support. Earth Hour pledging raised the awareness of climate change and everyone can make a big difference in saving energy.
